The phantom of security

The Wisdom of Insecurity · 1951

It must be obvious, from the start, that there is a contradiction in wanting to be perfectly secure in a universe whose very nature is momentariness and fluidity. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Tomorrow and plans for tomorrow can have no significance at all unless you are in full contact with the reality of the present. To pursue security is to pursue a constantly retreating phantom, and the faster you chase it, the faster it runs ahead.
