The map is not the territory
A map is not the territory it represents, but, if correct, it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness. If the map could be ideally correct, it would include, in a reduced scale, the map of the map; the map of the map, of the map; and so on, endlessly. People react to their abstractions — beliefs, labels, feeds, slogans — as if they were reality itself. This is identification. The harder, saner path is consciousness of abstracting: this is my map, not the land.

The cortical pause
Insert a moment of silence before reacting to the symbol. The nervous system abstracts only a tiny fraction of what arrives. Flood it with symbols detached from silent experience, and the thalamus answers as if the word were the event. Index. Date. Add etc. Politician-2025 in this instance, not Politician is. The organism-as-a-whole-in-environments can return to cortical evaluation. In the age of instant outrage, this pause is not manners. It is hygiene for a 45-mile nervous marvel.
